
What Is DHSS?
The Defense Health Services Systems (DHSS) Program Office is developing or maintaining 26 automated information systems used throughout the Military Health System in three major areas: clinical support, medical logistics and resources. DHSS is capitalizing on best practices resulting in reduced time to market, economies of scale and improved product quality. DHSS products help detect and contain the spread of disease across the world, manage the delivery of drugs and medical supplies around the world and track billions of dollars annually in healthcare services to our 9.6 million beneficiaries.
DHSS Clinical Support Division
DHSS clinical support provides information technology solutions that help optimize clinical processes throughout the MHS. DHSS clinical support is a foundational capability for delivering accessible, quality, and cost-effective health care to all MHS beneficiaries. The clinical support suite of solutions includes clinical data analysis, medical scheduling and appointing, provider privileging and credentialing, patient safety and electronic health care reporting, nutrition management solutions, and special needs management systems. The Clinical Support Division is aligned with the portfolio of the DASD (Clinical & Program Policy).

DHSS Medical Logistics Division
A premier service supported by this DHSS division is the DMLSS automated information system, which delivers a tri-service suite of modules that standardizes medical logistics across the MHS in all military treatment facilities and combatant commands. DMLSS improves the effectiveness and efficiency of MHS health care delivery by reducing the time providers and health care professionals spend on logistics. DMLSS delivers stock control; prime vendor operations; research and price comparison; property accounting; biomedical maintenance; and management of capital equipment, inventory, and facilities. These products are tailored to support medical logistics operations and to accommodate unique areas such as requirements for quality assurance and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Additional DHSS medical logistics systems and applications provide access to integrated joint service medical assets, along with the reporting of serviceable medical supplies and equipment available for in-kind exchange when patient movement items must accompany a patient to his or her final destination. Through the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System, the MHS can capture industrial hygiene and hearing conservation data. The ESSENCE program is a medical surveillance application that screens the MHS for rapid and unusual increases in the occurrence of certain syndromes. DHSS Resources Division
DHSS resources provides world-class enterprise information technology systems that support the business of military medicine. The products managed by DHSS resources support critical business processes such as personnel readiness, personnel management, learning management, and medical coding and collections. The resources division also provides solutions that determine the total cost of providing health care to 9.6 million beneficiaries. Together, these systems create a powerful suite of resource management tools that optimize the delivery of health care to service men and women and their families. DHSS resources also supports the centralized data store for the MHS. The system collects, processes, and manages nearly 100 terabytes of enterprise data through a powerful suite of decision-support tools. With active interfaces around the world, DHSS resources manages the receipt, processing, and storage of billions of health care records that characterize MHS operations and performance. The Resources Division is aligned with the portfolio of the DASD (Health Budget & Financial Policy).
