Friday, June 20, 2008 - Virginia Cares About Wounded Warriors
Posted by:
S. Ward Casscells, M.D.
I was encouraged Wednesday evening to attend a meeting of the leaders of Virginia's Wounded Warrior Program, hosted by the Critical Incident Analysis Group led by Professor Greg Saathoff, MD, of UVA, DoD's Jerry Jones, Vince Burgess, the governor's Commissioner of Veteran's Services, Jim Reinhard, MD, the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Paul Galanti of the Virginia Veterans Services Board, former governor, senator, and U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran Charles Robb, Ed Meese, former attorney general (under President Reagan), author and Heritage Foundation leader and former Congressman and Secretary of the Army Jack Marsh, and many other concerned citizens, most of whom had seen their share of combat. I was encouraged by their recognition that most veterans come home stronger and able to play a leading role in their communities. Those who come home shaken need our help until they get back on their feet. They do not want pity, but a chance to prove themselves in a job with a future. That is the best therapy. My hat is off to the hard-working, civic-minded Virginians.
