CIO Corner
Welcome to The Portal, the Military Health System’s newest monthly publication dedicated to military health information technology. We’re excited to lead this conversation and share with you the good work we’re doing.
As you read this column, a Veteran is getting a prescription refilled, an Army soldier has been injured in the line of duty and a military spouse is giving birth. This is not unusual at all. It’s part of our daily life at MHS.
How prepared are we? I recently overheard a colleague of mine describing how we support our military medical providers both here in the United States and around the world. He said, “We practice medicine through the hands of others.” By making sure that the doctors, nurses and others in the medical profession have the right information and materials at the right place, at the right time, we allow them to perform the miracles that they do. These miracles are delivered in many cases thanks to the innovative information technology solutions we offer.
One of the reasons we developed The Portal was to share our story with you. The Portal will bring you concise and easy-to-read information directly from the MHS Office of the Chief Information Officer. Examples of the topics you’ll find in this and future issues of The Portal include Patient Safety Reporting, electronic health records, medical surveillance tools, the acquisition certification program and many others. We’ll focus on how our products affect the daily life of both medical providers and patient beneficiaries and what you can expect to see from the OCIO in the future.
To bring you the latest information we’re going to get out of our everyday environment and talk to people on the front line of the innovations that benefit our Service members and Veterans every day, share the good news of our work and also take a look at where we can improve. I hope you’ll take some time to enjoy this new product as we continue to drive the military health IT innovation conversation.
To learn more about The Portal, watch my video that describes the newsletter and gives information about its purpose. Subscribers can have The Portal delivered straight to their email inbox or view it directly on our newly refreshed website at www.health.mil/mhscio. I invite you to forward this to your colleagues and encourage them to subscribe.
Our goal is for The Portal to become a valued source of information to help you understand our mission, activities and contributions to the ever-evolving field of health IT, as well as its contribution to building and maintaining an optimal health care system for our military personnel and their families.
This is your publication and we want to hear from you. Let us know what kind of topics you’d like to read about in future issues by emailing us at OCIOCommunications@tma.osd.mil.
