The 2012 Military Health System Conference drew to a close with remarks from Dr. Jonathan Woodson, assistant secretary of defense for Health Affairs. As the MHS transitions from a focus on healthcare to one of health in a time of fiscal restraints, Woodson asked the audience to embrace change and not be derailed by changes in budget.

"We have a real opportunity to shape our future and should not allow ourselves to be distracted or confused by fiscal challenges. Instead, we should seize upon the opportunity to become stronger, better and more relevant. It is about the value we provide to the people we serve. That is the story we need to tell over and over again," Woodson said.

Woodson also emphasized the role of leadership development in the environment of change within the Department of Defense.

"The wartime experience certainly heightened the awareness of good leadership. However, the development of good leaders requires constant attention," Woodson said. "Military health system leaders need special competencies to manage health care issues effectively in the 21st century."

As the new era of military medicine begins, Woodson targeted the spirit of innovation as a powerful tool for change with the abundance of expertise in the medical armed forces.

In conclusion Woodson said it takes courage to change. "This need for courage doesn’t begin with you but begins with me; with me and my team to enable of you to reduce the bureaucratic barriers to change."
