Change... Will it be good for us?

After a previous announcement that President elect Barack Obama asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates to remain, President Elect, Obama announced his security team. He named retired Marine Gen. Jim Jones as his national security adviser, Eric Holder as attorney general, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as homeland security secretary and Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations.

In the summer of 2007, along with Claire McCaskill (D-MO), then Senator Obama  was instrumental in passing the, "Dignity for Wounded Warriors Act.”  “This bill goes a long way toward providing our service members with the treatment and facilities they and their families need to heal and rebuild their lives,” he said about his authored legislation.

Although our new Commander in Chief’s security team is many rungs up the ladder from the ground work done by the average medic or corpsman, their leadership affects us all. On this page and in the forum, inquiring minds want to know. How do you think our new leadership will affect what you do on a day-to-day basis? Will the military and US Defense be “ruined” as some talking heads across the airways have said, or will we have the tools and guidance we need to fulfill Obama’s 2007 promise to service members?

Does it even matter since we are Warriors and our duty transcends US administrations?

Information on DD 294!!!

Chief Sarge:
I was enlisted for 10 years 6 in the Marines and 4 in the Army. I was medically discharged in 03 but they did not retire me. The Army only gave me 10% disability. But the VA gave me 80%. That is why I have been trying so hard to get the new DD Form 294. If what I have read about the new process is true, then they will retire me.

Meanwhile, I am trying to find this form which is supposed to begin the review process. It is for the retirement disability do over for service men and women that were dischged form the military with less than 20% from the respective service.

Dumpdawg

Dumpdawg, and others who have asked about the DD 294:

This form is STILL under review. It may come out as late as January, 2009.

Here's some more information.

Dear Aunt Mabel

Dear Aunt Mabel,
I met a great lady over in Iraq. We’re both soldiers. I was already in the unit and she came in with a group of Reservists. Many of the guys gave her a hard time because she was a reservist. They kept saying things like, “not only is she a girl but a know-nothing Reservist too.” They didn’t get to know her like I did. I learned things like she had to stop working on her master’s degree when she was activated.

And she’s smart too! One of our trainers kept telling us that we had to make sure we kept a look out for people’s hands and you know what she did? Riding in the gunner’s position she kept waiving at Iraqis like she was the Rose Bowl Queen. The people waived back and we could easily see their hands…one hand at least. I think it was someone’s hidden hand that just about killed me.

After loosing a leg above the knee and getting some nasty burns I was doing OK…wasn’t too worried about finding a girlfriend…hell, who’d want me in this condition? Well, my battle buddy, the Rose Bowl Queen, started emailing me. We kind of started a thing over emails and chat rooms and stuff. Now she’s going to come to Texas to see me. It’s weird, but every time I think about her coming, I start crying. I can walk now, sort of…but I don’t look too good. I’m not a man like she knew me.

I don’t know how to act. What do you think?

Jerry

Dear Jerry,
Oh hon! You want to do the hootchie cootche with her and you’re afraid the oil well isn’t going to pump. I can see your fear dripping all over your words. First of all, if ya don’t know how to act…don’t act. Be real. I know men aren’t real good at this, but try talking. I’m not referring to the locker room stuff, I’m talking about real words and feelings to someone like a doctor or a shrink. Yea, I’d like to know what those couch-gazers have to say about reconstruction….and I ain’t talking about Iraq.

Don’t worry about the tears, your body just does things different now. What ever you do, don’t make the mistake of thinking women like to cuddle. That’s only after the fireworks. You two work it out and write a book about it. If it’s published and not banned, I’ll keep a copy under my pillow. Here darlin, maybe this link will help.

Love,
Aunt Mabel

I am an outside observer to your portal. With your permission I would like to continue, and , maybe off a comment or two. I was an enlisted Navy Corpsamn for 14 years [ one tour of "The Nam" with the USMC ] one year enlisted Army Medic and 10 years Army Nurse Corps [ Operation Desert Shield/Storm] Maybe I have earned the "right" to be here.

Keep up the good work, be very careful out there.

Great idea to start this med personnel forum. So I have a question that you might have an answer to; my son recently graduated his Navy "A" School as a Corpsman. What specialty training should he consider as rewarding career while in the Navy that would also be a lucrative career when he finally decides to get out?

Thanks for your response. Hoohah!

MSgt Gay...you're not the first retiree to ask this question. It's certainly worth looking at. Your experience is well-respected by me, and I'm sure our fellow medics/corpsmen. Like they used to say back in the day..."Watch this spot!"

Hi Bob,
As an active duty HM and an old Operating RM Tech myself, I can recommend going to OR "C" school. Definitely a surefire job in the civilian world. But then again X-ray, Lab, PT, RT/cardio pulmonary, opthalmology tech to name a few can also provide great job opportunities when he gets out. Tell him BZ and thanks for caring!!!

1sg Ret.
I've been a corpsman for about 41/2 years now. If he is looking for a good paying job he can always challenge the tests for LPN and RN. There are also all sorts of "C" schools that would give him great opportunity for a well paying job. I went the FMF rout, and i wouldn’t trade my job for anything in the world. This job has taught me more then just medical. it has taught me comradery, discipline, and I think most important it doesn’t matter how far you are away from your parents brothers and sisters. You always have family at your side.

Thanks for that, SFC Gillespie. This retired HM1 spent a year on the ground in 'Nam '69-'70 as a Milphap district medical advisor. Sure wish we had had a site like this available to us then! Returned 5 years later on board USS Enterprise to aid evacuation of Saigon.
