Defense Secretary Commends Vet's Example

The U.S. military’s focus on wellness is not just about building physical strength for service members and their families. Another key component that is equally important is building mental agility or “resiliency.”

Being able to bounce back after a period of adversity or intense stress is an important part of mission readiness and moving forward in life.

Iraq War veteran Jose Rene “J.R.” Martinez is an example of resiliency despite adversity. He is the latest winner along with professional dancer, Katrina Smirnoff, of “Dancing with the Stars” a television contest show.

Martinez was injured in Iraq in 2003, suffering smoke inhalation and severe burns. After his recovery, he used his experience to become a motivational speaker and an actor on a national daytime soap opera show. Those positive steps earned him a spot on the popular dance show.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta, sent a letter to Martinez congratulating him on his win and commending his ability to overcome obstacles.

“Over the course of this competition,” the secretary wrote, “your spirit captivated the nation and your victory sends a powerful message about the strength and resilience of our wounded warriors.”
