Patient Safety Awards

The Department of Defense (DoD) and the Patient Safety Program (PSP) are committed to creating a culture of safety and quality care within the Military Healthcare System. The DoD Patient Safety Award recognizes efforts designed to improve the care delivered within the Military Healthcare System. The award identifies those who have shown innovation and commitment to the development of systems and processes that are tightly organized around the needs of the patient. DoD seeks to recognize efforts that create an environment where safe, quality care is provided and is the responsibility of all members of the team. The categories for the Patient Safety Awards are based on Safe Practices, known to be critical to creating and sustaining a culture of safety.

The winners of the 2011 Patient Safety Awards are: 


Award 1: Teamwork Training and Skill Building for an In-Patient Facility

Facility: Bassett Army Community Hospital, Ft. Wainwright, Alaska  

Title of Project: Fixing the Unfixable Through the Power of TeamSTEPPS 


Award 2: Identification and Mitigation of Risks and Hazards for an In-Patient Facility

Facility: Naval Hospital Pensacola, Pensacola, Florida  

Title of Project: Blood Culture Collection Improvement     


Award 3: Identification and Mitigation of Risks and Hazards for an Ambulatory Center
  
Facility: Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam; 15th Medical Group, Hickam AFB, Hawaii  

Title of Project: A High Alert Medication Notification Process Using a Prevention Model


Award submissions were reviewed and scored by a board of evaluators familiar with the DoD PSP and with expertise in education, data analysis, and quality improvement. Winners were selected based on an average score evaluating the Abstract, Design Methods, Results, Conclusion, Sustainability, and Replication of the initiative to other MHS Facilities.

The winner for each category will give a brief presentation during one of the breakout sessions at the annual State of the Military Health System Conference. The next conference is scheduled for January 30, 2012 - February 2, 2012 at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md.
