The 4th Annual TeamSTEPPS Collaborative was held 2-3 June 2010 in Bethesda, Maryland.  The Collaborative is a joint venture between the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and DoD.  It is an opportunity for staff in the DoD Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) as well as in civilian organizations, to come together to focus on selected topics related to improving communication and reducing medical errors by integrating teamwork principles into daily practice,  from a multidisciplinary perspective.  Participants are able to connect, learn, and share success stories, lessons learned and emerging practices.

This year’s 2 day session was particularly powerful as it emphasized the post-training phase of TeamSTEPPS—more specifically aspects of John Kotter’s model—“make it happen and make it stick”.  This includes implementation, measurement and evaluation, aligning clinical skills with team skills and behaviors through simulation, and managing disruptive behaviors.  With sustained change so difficult, the Collaborative wanted to celebrate the spread, impact and sustainment of high-performing teams focused on team-driven care, during stressful times in complex healthcare systems.  Consensus from the previous participants, AHRQ, and DoD concurred that such meetings are critical to sustain the program by building a strong community of practice.   Approximately 300 people attended the Collaborative.

The host for this year’s Collaborative was the University of Minnesota which is one of the five National Implementation of TeamSTEPPS project Team Resource Centers. RADM Hunter, Deputy Director, TRICARE Management Activity was the featured speaker at the opening plenary on 2 June.

The 2nd annual break-out session for DoD participants was held just prior to the general Collaborative on 1 June, 1300-1700.  Approximately 110 staff from 30 DoD MTFs and five Army Dental Regions attended this session. Service Headquarters Patient Safety Representatives were also in attendance.  MTF participants selected to attend both the DoD session and the general Collaborative are TeamSTEPPS Champions (Patient Safety Managers and multidisciplinary change teams) and/or Master Instructors.  Most are actively involved in the initiative in their facilities.

The session included remarks from leaders in patient safety, interactive collaboration sessions for attendees to explore cases where TeamSTEPPS solutions have improved patient health outcomes, skill stations for attendees to visit and learn more about strategies and tools to enhance performance and patient safety, and networking opportunities throughout the course of the day.  Speakers who delivered formal remarks included Dr. Jack Smith, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Clinical and Program Policy, and Acting Chief Medical Officer for TRICARE Management Activity, and Heidi King, Deputy Director of the DoD PSP and Director of the PSP's Patient Safety Solutions Center.

This was a great opportunity for DoD teams to network and to discuss lessons learned and barriers and challenges to full implementation in the military environment.
