John V. Teyhen is the acting chief of staff at the Defense Health Agency in Falls Church, Virginia. From April 2019 to December 2022, Teyhen served DHA as the principal deputy for combat support.
Teyhen retired from the U.S. Army in 2018 after 34 years of service.
During his service, Teyhen held a wide variety of key command and staff assignments, including as the assistant corps chief for preventive health sciences at the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and as consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General for environmental science and engineering. He travelled extensively around the globe for military duties, including Iraq, Haiti, Bosnia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, China, Taiwan, and Kenya.
Teyhen holds a bachelor’s degree in health from Austin Peay State University, where he also participated in ROTC and received his commission as a U.S. Army officer. He also holds a Master of Public Health in environmental and occupational health and safety from the University of Tennessee. During graduate school, he completed an internship with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Additionally, he completed a Training with Industry fellowship with the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington D.C.
Teyhen earned a variety of awards and decorations during his military service is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit and earned the prestigious U.S. Army Surgeon General’s “A” proficiency designator.
Teyhen and his wife are avid marathoners and were the first military service members to run marathons in all 50 states.
