Defense Health Agency, Great Lakes

The Defense Health Agency–Great Lakes (formerly known as the Military Medical Support Office) (DHA-GL) assists with the coordination of medical care in the United States and District of Columbia for:

  • Active duty service members enrolled in TRICARE PrimeA managed care option available in Prime Service Areas in the United States; you have an assigned primary care manager who provides most of your care.TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Prime RemoteA managed care option for active duty service members and their families who live in designated remote locations in the U.S. (usually more than 50 miles or one hour's drive time from a military hospital or clinic).TRICARE Prime Remote that qualify under the DoD/VA Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for a  Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Blindness
  • Active duty service members enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote
  • Non-enrolled active duty service members not managed by a military hospital or clinic 
  • Reserve Component service members in remote areas with Service-approved line of duty (LOD) injuries, illnesses or diseases

What We Do


  • Coordinates civilian health care services for remotely-located active duty service members
  • Provides pre-authorization for civilian line of duty (LOD) medical care
  • Collaborates with unit representatives regarding LOD care for remotely-located service members
  • Provides authorization (pre-, concurrent and retro-) for VA medical care for active duty service members accepted under the DoD/VA MOA for diagnosis for SCI, TBI or blindness
  • Authorizes the payment of civilian medical claims
