Opioids in the Acute Care Setting: Safety Considerations – ECRI Institute

Pain is common among patients in acute care settings, and some patients have legitimate indications for opioids to control their pain. However, opioid therapy carries risks of patient harm ranging from nausea to respiratory depression and possibly death. Opioid use—and misuse—is increasingly being addressed through laws, regulations, and standards. The use of opioids in acute care is also part of a larger discussion about effective and safe pain management.

All of these factors make opioid therapy a prime concern for military health facilities and their clinicians. During this webinar, attendees will learn about preventable errors that involve opioids and strategies to ensure their safe and appropriate use.
