Clinical Informatics

The Clinical Informatics and Technology Division uses clinical information, healthcare data systems, and modern technology to support clinical care and research efforts designed to improve the health outcomes of Service members and Veterans who have experienced traumatic extremity injuries and amputations. The Clinical Informatics and Technology Division will build upon the Federated Registry Data Warehouse through linkages with existing data systems such as the DoD Trauma Registry, Military Orthopedic Trauma Registry, and the VA Amputation System of Care Outcome Repository. Aligning to Electronic Health Records will identify individuals, demographics, and practices to study variations among and effectiveness of acute and rehabilitation care practices, prosthetic technology and services, incidence of complications, mitigation of secondary disabilities, patient outcomes and quality of life.

Defense and Veterans Affairs Extremity Injury and Amputation Registry

Through its partnership with the Defense Health Agency, the Clinical Informatics and Technology Division is developing a registry of amputation and extremity injury patients by building upon the Military Health System’s Enterprise Data Warehouse. We call this registry the Defense and Veterans Affairs Extremity Injury and Amputation Registry (DVEAR).

The DVEAR will improve the EACE’s ability to conduct clinically relevant research; foster collaboration; and build partnership across multidisciplinary international, federal, and academic networks. The DVEAR will also enhance our understanding of the magnitude of amputation care in the military population further enhancing life-long support. The DVEAR will be unique within the MHS.

Our objective is to create a registry that supports the following capabilities:

The DVEAR will aid providers in identifying the best approaches to care for their patients based on evidence-based practices and tracking their progress with outcome measures.

  • Execute multidisciplinary protocols
  • Improve institutional knowledge and skills
  • Identify best practices across the MHS and VA
  • Improve the sustainment and advancement of amputee care

The DVEAR will provide robust data to support accurate reporting of the extremity injury and amputation population and give DOD and VA leaders the information they need to make operational and resourcing decisions.

  • Conduct mission analysis and reporting
  • Standardize data collection
  • Strengthen readiness

The DVEAR will provide current, comprehensive data from all points in the continuum of care to support research further improving extremity injury care and utilize data from outcome measures to conduct research.

  • Advance Rehabilitation Sciences
  • Improve Medical / Surgical Intervention
  • Advance Prosthetic / Orthotics
  • Enhance Epidemiologic Studies
