Local Area Information

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Maryland surrounds almost three quarters of Washington, D.C., and is a cornucopia of interesting places to visit, from life on the Chesapeake Bay to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The great city of Baltimore is nearby, as is the Eastern Shore with its beautiful beaches and shoreline.

Downtown Bethesda

Just south of the Walter Reed campus is downtown Bethesda, offering dining, shopping, arts, and entertainment. From four-star restaurants to quick bites to eat, Bethesda offers a multiple of dining options, movie theaters, art galleries, flea markets, and other shopping opportunities within easy Metro access or walking distance.

Northern Virginia

Nearby Northern Virginia is a region of striking contrasts, distinct from the rest of the state in many ways. Arlington and Alexandria are cosmopolitan settings with great urban and suburban housing, dining, and shopping options. Slightly further away, Northern Virginia yields to leisurely scenic byways and with its award-winning wineries, white-fenced horse farms, and a variety of local, regional, and national parks.

Washington, D.C.

The District of Columbia, our nation’s capital, and the most powerful city in the world, is the hub of American political life and broad, international cultural diversity. From its majestic monuments, many free museums, and historical treasures, to its unique neighborhoods and numerous street festivals, the city is a great mix of delightful contrasts. For ease in getting around town, D.C.’s Metro system is one of the best and easiest to navigate systems in the country.

Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center

A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center is located on Fort Belvoir, located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Fort Belvoir, a large military installation situated along the Potomac River, serves as the home to numerous defense and support agencies, including the Defense Logistics Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The surrounding area features natural beauty, with parks and waterfront views. Located less than 20 miles from Washington, D.C., Fort Belvoir's proximity to Washington, D.C. allows for easy access to the nation's capital, making it a strategic location for military operations and a desirable residential area for those serving in the armed forces.
