Program Description
The U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing is a 36-month program with 12 months of didactic education at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and 24 months of clinical education at one of eight military hospitals across the country.
The program is located at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Upon graduation, students are awarded a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree from Baylor University, and are eligible to take the National Certification Exam. USAGPAN’s devoted faculty and staff, in partnership with Baylor University, ensures our program is maintained as a highly regarded institution of excellence.
Mission
The objective of the USAGPAN is to produce independent Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists as highly skilled leaders for the U.S. Army and the Veteran’s Administration health delivery systems. The primary focus of the USAGPAN is to train and prepare clinicians for complete autonomous practice in all clinical settings, including austere environments.
Curriculum & Schedules
Morning cases conferences, journal club presentations, and faculty presentations.
Four to six out-rotations per year for specialty cases such as Obstetric Anesthesia, Cardiac Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia and Neuro Anesthesia.
Nurse Anesthesia Residents have an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of military medical training, from guest lectures to field training.
Undergraduate or graduate statistics course
Residents have simulation built into all phases of learning. During phase one simulations focus on routine anesthesia management. During phase two simulations focus on high-risk low-frequency events.
Leadership in Advance Practice Nursing. Basic Officer Leadership Course.
Scholarly and Professional Development Opportunities
Each resident will complete a scholarly project as part of their graduation requirements.
Role Development and Professional aspects courses.
Applicant Information, Rotation & Interview Opportunities
Each applicant will perform a three-day job shadow and interview at a nearby phase two site as part of the application process. Civilian applicants will coordinate this through an Army healthcare recruiter.

Applicants will interview with a three-person panel at the end of their three-day shadow experience. Applicants are expected to have a solid foundation in critical care nursing, but are not expected to know about anesthesia nursing.
Program graduates take the National Certification Exam of the NBCRNA immediately following graduation.
Teaching Opportunities
Residents will teach anesthesia basics to ancillary staff, visitors to the OR, and other nurse learners.
Faculty and Mentorship
Faculty include a wide variety of DNP and PhD trained CRNAs as well as physician faculty.
Each resident is assigned a mentor who they will meet with monthly to discuss their progress in the course.
Well-Being
The CRNA Residents engage in regular scheduled wellness activities coordinated by the SAUSHEC CRNA Residency Program. Additionally, they have full access to the Well-Being programs within San Antonio Uniformed Services Education Consortium.
