Mental Health Month – “What Works for Me”

The “What Works for Me” campaign aims to stimulate conversation among providers, service members, and other members of the military community to share the tools that support their own mental health and emphasize the effectiveness of evidence-based treatment available to all service members and families in the MHS. This May, service members, leaders, and health care providers will share what works for them to sustain their mental health, and relieve stress, sleep better, practice self-care, and more. We are also approaching Mental Health through two Total Force Fitness domains, Environmental Fitness and Psychological Fitness.

During Mental Health Month, the MHS also seeks to increase awareness about behavioral health care services and promote and enhance suicide prevention, intervention, and follow-up care for service members and their families.

Nurse’s Week

During National Nurses Week (May 6-12), the MHS seeks to tell the story of military medicine through the lens of military and civilian nurses. The 2021 Nurses Week theme is “Unified, Reliable, Ready” supporting the continued focus and recognition of the impact of nursing during COVID-19. It reinforces the unified health care team’s role in support of current Department of Defense priorities to protect our service members, their families, and our workforce; maintain military readiness to defend the nation and its interests; and support the national COVID-19 response.

Women’s Health Month

Women have served in the United States military throughout its history, and comprise more than 17% of active-duty service members. Female service members play an increasingly broad and pivotal role in U.S. military operations, making women’s health critical to readiness. The MHS is committed to exploring and addressing the unique mental health needs of women in the military through ongoing research, policy examination, and working groups.

Better Hearing and Healthy Vision Month

May is Better Hearing and Healthy Vision Month. Hearing and vision are vital to mission readiness, and frequently at increased risk from common military activities. Service members can prevent hearing and vision loss by wearing proper protective gear.

May Monthly Observances

May features many national health and military observances that you can consider highlighting on your channels. The observances in bold have graphics and content available on the May Social Media and Content page.
