Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration Banner

The Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration (CBSD)TRICARE.mil expands childbirth and breastfeeding coverage for TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select beneficiaries. Coverage now includes support from the following non-medical professionals:

  • Certified non-medical labor doulas
  • Certified lactation consultants
  • Certified lactation counselors

The demonstration runs from Jan. 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2026. The CBSD will expand overseas on Jan. 1, 2025. TRICARE may terminate or extend the demonstration based on the impact of these professionals on maternal care.

The CBSD will cover certified network providers at no additional cost. All providers, network or non-network, must meet the CBSD qualifications.

Beneficiaries don’t need referrals to get services under this demonstration. However, TRICARE Prime beneficiaries will need a referral from their primary care manager if they see a non-network provider.

The Defense Health Agency will release a quarterly “Invitation to Participate in the Defense Health Agency Maternity Survey” to learn about beneficiary experiences giving birth in the Military Health System. This survey is confidential and voluntary, and will be sent via email to all beneficiaries who have given birth after January 2021, even if they aren’t eligible for or choose not to participate in the CBSD. Beneficiaries should make sure their email address is up to date in DEERS, or with their regional contractor.

What is a TRICARE Demonstration?

A demonstration is a special provision that lets TRICARE try new methods of delivering health care. It also gives financial relief to a certain population. After the demonstration, the service may or may not become a TRICARE covered service.
