Military Health System

Employer Identification Number (EIN)

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) also required the establishment of a standard national employer identifier (EIN) to be used in certain electronic transactions. The Final Rule was published in the Federal Register in May 2002 and became effective July 2002.

Since 2002, the HIPAA Transactions, Code Sets and Identifiers (TCS&I) Office assisted the Military Health System with implementing and reporting the EIN, as required, in HIPAA-adopted electronic transactions.
