The Federal Health Information Exchange (FHIE) enables one-way, secure electronic exchange of patient medical information from the Department of Defense’s electronic health record to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ EHR for all separated service members.
Using FHIE, VA clinicians are able to view electronic clinical data from the DoD’s Composite Health Care System and deployment health assessments from the DoD’s Defense Medical Surveillance System on separated or retired service members who come to any VA facility for care. FHIE data includes patient demographics, laboratory results, radiology reports, outpatient pharmacy data, allergy data, consults, discharge summaries and elements of the standard ambulatory data record.
