Viewing Artifacts and Images with the Health Artifact and Image Management Solution (HAIMS)

HAIMS provides global visibility and access to artifacts and images

The Health Artifact and Image Management Solution (HAIMS) provides Departments of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care providers global visibility and access to artifacts and images generated during the health care delivery process.

HAIMS provides an enterprise-wide data sharing capability for all types of artifacts and images (A&I), including radiographs, clinical photographs, electrocardiograph, waveforms, audio files, video and scanned documents. It interfaces with local repositories and shares data not previously globally accessible. HAIMS also makes available an electronic version of the Service Treatment Record (STR) to the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA). HAIMS completed Full Deployment June 2014.

Key Features

  • Radiological Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images for visibility and access to A&I
  • Repository to store A&I (non-Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) sources)
  • Global database for registered A&I metadata
  • Access to radiographic images in DoD PACS
  • Allows bulk scanning of documents
  • Single sign on access through clinical workflow
  • Accessible as a standalone system or within AHLTA

Key Benefits

  • Access point for DoD providers to view VA artifacts and images
  • Population health and medical research for Wounded Warriors
  • Mass scanning for VBA compensation and pension benefits determination
  • Mass ingestion capability to external repositories

Service Treatment Record (STR)

HAIMS stores a complete, digitized, and electronically formatted STR upon service member separation. HAIMS combines all components (paper and electronic) of the STR into one accessible system and makes them available to the VBA upon request, significantly improving the benefits determination process.
