Will your child be heading to college, graduating, or turning age 21 soon? If so, you don’t want to miss this month’s webinar. Join TRICARE for the “TRICARE Coverage for College Students and Young Adults” webinar on Thursday, May 30, from 1 to 2 p.m. ET.

This webinar will discuss health care options for children moving away to college and those aging out of TRICARE. You’ll learn how to maintain TRICARE coverage for your child, how to purchase TRICARE Young Adult, and much more.

“Going to college is a big transition,” said Debra Fisher, TRICARE Policy and Benefits Office at the Defense Health Agency (DHA). “It’s also a TRICARE Qualifying Life Event, which may open new enrollment opportunities for your student and other family members.”

Your student’s health care options depend on the location of the college, the sponsor status, and a family’s individual preferences.

If a child is enrolled in TRICARE Prime and is attending college in the same region as the sponsor, he or she may keep the same coverage using the sponsor’s address. Enrollment may also be transferred to the school address.

TRICARE PrimeA managed care option available in Prime Service Areas in the United States; you have an assigned primary care manager who provides most of your care.TRICARE Prime isn’t available everywhere,” said Fisher, who will speak at the webinar. “TRICARE Prime must be available in the new location, and the student must meet all enrollment criteria to maintain coverage.”

Use the TRICARE Plan Finder to see what health plans may be available in the location of your child’s college. You can also call your TRICARE regional contractor.

What if your student attends college in a different TRICARE region? If your student studies overseas? Will coverage change for children studying in the U.S. with TRICARE SelectTRICARE Prime Remote, or US Family Health Plan? Join the webinar to learn about TRICARE coverage in these situations.

Children who graduate from college or turn age 21 are no longer eligible for regular TRICARE. But they have other health care options, including TRICARE Young Adult (TYA).

“After graduating college, your child may have the option to purchase TRICARE Young AdultA premium-based plan for qualified adult children.TRICARE Young Adult,” said Shane Pham, a webinar presenter from the DHA TRICARE Policy and Benefits Office. “TRICARE Young Adult is available for purchase for qualifying young adults until age 26.”

TYA coverage includes medical and pharmacy benefits, but excludes dental coverage.

“While young adults may qualify to purchase TRICARE Young Adult coverage, it isn’t their only option,” explained Pham.

Another option for young adults is the Continued Health Care Benefit Program. This program provides health coverage for an additional 18 to 36 months after losing TRICARE. You can find other health care coverage options through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

New 3-D mammogram option the next step in diagnosis, treatment

Article

Chief Hospital Corpsman Naomi Perez, a certified mammogram technician (left), conducts a mammogram for a patient at Naval Hospital Pensacola. A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray procedure used to detect the early stages of breast cancer. A policy change effective Jan. 1, 2020, will allow digital breast tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, to be used to screen for breast cancer. The procedure – known technically as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) – will be offered primarily to women age 40 and older, and women age 30 and older who are considered high-risk for breast cancer. The procedure’s 3-D images provide a more thorough means of detecting the disease. (U.S. Navy Photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Brannon Deugan)
