Dentistry isn't the first thing that pops into one's mind when it comes to sailor and submariner readiness. Yet having to be taken via medevac off a vessel in the far-flung Pacific Ocean because of an abscessed tooth wouldn't be the best way for a sailor to get on their commander's good side.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Katherine Nolan, a frontline nurse with the Army's 53rd Field Hospital in Europe in WW II, gives an eyewitness account of her recollections of the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and Luxembourg between Dec. 16, 1944, and Jan. 25, 1945. The prolonged winter battle marked the Germans desperate attempt to hold back the Allied advances across Europe.

Integration between military branches allows for greater strategic and tactical advantages—which is why cooperation is key to military success. Four U.S. Army 68W combat medics and two 68C license practical nurses from Joint Base Lewis-McChord 29th Hospital Center 28th Detachment, trained onboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan to learn from the ship’s medical department in an inter-branch exchange of knowledge.

U.S. Army Flight Paramedics assigned to 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, train with and assess an in-flight casualty to better the design for the current aircraft that is being utilized for in-flight treatments. The 82nd Airborne Division has partnered with the Future Vertical Lift—Cross Functional Team and the Program Executive Office—Aviation to help future medevac operations by shaping the design of the medical cabin of the future long range assault aircraft. Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division provided essential feedback on the future medical evacuation cabin’s design within the Future Long Range Assault Aircraft requirements from Nov. 12 through Nov. 22. As part of a special user evaluation, Critical Care Flight Paramedics of 3-82 General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade and  Combat Medics of 1st Brigade Combat Team, provided feedback and suggestions as their teams conducted various scenarios within the future MEDEVAC cabin technical demonstrator.
