Q1:

A service member’s record in MEDPROS/ASIMS/MRRS shows that a DNA specimen was shipped, but it’s not showing it’s received. Why not?

A:

There are many things that could have happened. It may not have ever made it to the Repository – check with the lab or shipping department to make sure they’re not “batching” cards and holding it. This often results in duplicate cards being drawn. Maybe the individual transposed two digits of their SSN – without a valid SSN on the card, it can’t be accessioned. Maybe the card was received but didn’t have a signature. While we may have notified the original draw site, the individual is now with you and they never got a chance to redraw.

Call the DNA Repository at our main number – (302) 346-8800 – and we can check our records to tell you what we have on file for the individual, whether it’s a rejected card, a change of branch of service, or no record at all. If it’s there, we can also upload it to your system again, and hopefully that will correct the record.

Q2:

We’ve sent two cards for an individual and his record is not being updated. I know he was previously in a different branch of service – what’s the issue?

A:

If an individual has had a card on file with a different branch of service, his card is going to the system of record for that first branch and anything else coming in is considered a duplicate. The Repository has measures in place to catch duplicate cards coming in and correct this, but we cannot always identify them as such. If you know someone has changed their branch of service, call our main number and let us know. We’ll verify the individual’s change in DEERS and then change the record in our system to the new branch. We can then upload to the current system, which should clear their record.

Q3:

I’m a contractor who was previously in the military and my HR department wants proof that I have a specimen on file. Can I have a confirmation emailed to me?

A:

Yes! Call our main number and after taking your information, an email can be sent to you confirming your specimen is on file at the AFRSSIR.

Q4:

I’m with the HR department of a DoD awarded contractor. My staff is deploying and according to my contract, I need to verify that DNA is on file with you. How do I do that?

A:

You can email a roster to us with names and SSN for your staff and we can provide you with a report that gives the accession date for anyone on your staff that we have on record. If there’s no date, we don’t have one. Call our main number to get more information.

Q5:

Can I get a copy of my DNA report?

A:

Sorry, there is no DNA report done on your specimen when it is received; we simply input relevant information into our database and store the card.

Q6:

How do I order DNA Card Supplies?

A:

You can order supplies in a couple different ways.
1. The AFRSSIR Supply Order Request, AFMES Form 6 dated Jan 2017 can be found on our website at https://health.mil/afmes. The form can be filled in online and emailed to us directly from the site.
2. The AFRSSIR Supply Order Request, AFMES Form 6 dated Jan 2017 can be downloaded onto your desktop, filled in and emailed directly to brenda.l.waite.civ@mail.mil.
3. The AFRSSIR Supply Order Request, AFMES Form 6 dated Jan 2017 can be faxed to 302-346-8766.

Q7:

How long will it take to receive my supplies?

A:

As soon as the order is received it is processed and usually ships that same day barring any issues with historical submissions and orders. The supplies are always shipped via FedEx standard overnight unless your location does not have that service (i.e., overseas areas), then it’s shipped via USPS.

Q8:

Can I order enough supplies to take us through 4 to 5 years?

A:

No. Only order the amount you need but no more than a two year supply. Some of the supplies have only a 2-year shelf life. And we do not allow hoarding or stockpiling.

Q9:

I have two different styles of Bloodstain Cards. Which one should I use and are they supposed to have barcodes on them?

A:

Due to our new supply contracts we have two vendors we get our supplies from. Each vendor has their own format for the cards so you may see two different bloodstain cards. Some of the older stock may still have barcodes on them but we here at AFRSSIR do not use barcodes for any type of identification. Each card meets all required specifications. Just remember that as long as you get your supplies from AFRSSIR they are good to use as is.

Q10:

Why do the nylon pouches look and feel different?

A:

Due to our new supply contracts we have two vendors we get our supplies from. Each vendor has their own pouch manufacturer. Each pouch meets all required specifications. Just remember that as long as you get your supplies from AFRSSIR they are good to use as is.

Q11:

Can I use desiccants if they are pink or white?

A:

No. Desiccants should be stored in an airtight container at all times and must be blue in color to use. If Desiccants are stored in open containers they can absorb the moisture in the air and turn pink or white rendering them useless. When this happens they must be discarded. Desiccants also have a 2-year shelf life. So if you see that your desiccants are not blue in color do not use them.
