Second Lieutenant Emily Jazmin Tatum Perez, 204th Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was killed on September 12, 2006, when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded under her Humvee as she was leading a convoy near Najaf in southern Iraq. Lieutenant Perez, from Fort Washington, Mary­land, was 23 years old and was the first female graduate of West Point to die in Iraq. She is buried at the West Point Cemetery.
