Program Description

The UAB Emergency Medicine Residency is dedicated to training compassionate, patient-centered, and clinically outstanding emergency physicians through a high-volume, high-acuity clinical experience with graduated autonomy and close faculty mentorship. Our diverse patient population, team-based teaching model, and nationally recognized simulation curriculum provide residents with exceptional preparation for both community and academic practice.

We emphasize wellness, mentorship, and leadership development while maintaining exceptional board pass rates and producing graduates who are aggressively recruited into practice and fellowship positions. With strong interdepartmental collaboration, innovative quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and a culture that prioritizes resident support, our program continues to distinguish itself as a leader in clinical training and education.

Military Affiliation Highlights

The UAB Emergency Medicine Residency Program offers up to two new military residency positions each year, with a total of six active-duty trainees across the program at any given time. We are proud to have numerous faculty members with prior military service and extensive experience in military operational medicine.

The curriculum is highly relevant to military training: residents gain significant trauma exposure through high-volume rotations in one of the busiest trauma centers in the Southeast, along with extensive critical care experience in medical, surgical, pediatric, and trauma ICUs. Residents also rotate with prehospital and EMS services, including opportunities to train alongside specialized teams, and our program maintains active involvement with SOCMID and the Air Force Special Operations Surgical Team. This combination of high-acuity trauma, critical care, and operational medicine training ensures that our graduates are exceptionally prepared for the unique challenges of military emergency medicine.
