The National Intrepid Center of Excellence's (NICoE) Annual Reports showcase achievements, milestones, and lessons learned for each fiscal year.

  • 2022 Annual Report2022 NICoE Annual Report Cover
    The NICoE 2022 Annual Report showcases the collective achievements and impact of the Defense Intrepid Network for TBI and Brain Health. This was a phenomenal year of growth in traumatic brain injury (TBI) clinical care, research, and education. In the report, you will learn about the expanded clinical offerings, advanced understanding of TBI through collaborative research, and educational opportunities for providers, students, and patients across the Military Health System.
  • 2021 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2021 Annual Report shares news of the momentous process of officially establishing the Defense Intrepid Network for TBI and Brain Health as a Department of Defense program of record. We also cover the Translating Research Into Practice Initiative and provide research study highlights, amongst other things.
  • 2020 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2020 Annual Report celebrates the NICoE's 10-year anniversary and looks back on a challenging year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the NICoE worked closely with the Intrepid Spirit Centers as part of an integrated Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Network to continue to provide exceptional patient care to service members across the country. In FY 2020, the NICoE also began providing telehealth options, expanded its research portfolio, updated its Intensive Outpatient Program, and worked to standardize patient care and outcome metrics across the Military Health System using the TBI Portal. The report highlights what makes the NICoE truly unique: interdisciplinary care, world-class experts, transformative research, innovative technology, an integrated network, professional education opportunities, and resilient patients and families.

    The NICoE's Annual Report for fiscal year 2019 shares the NICoE's blueprint for working toward its vision of being a global leader in TBI care, research, and education, with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of service members and families impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI). The report illustrates the NICoE's impact on patient care across the Military Health System and TBI Pathway of Care, its commitment to research that improves TBI diagnosis and treatment, and its ongoing education and outreach to increase the understanding of TBI. In addition, it highlights the NICoE's continued collaboration with the 10 facilities in the Intrepid Spirit Center Partnership Network and the focus on synchronizing clinical care to ensure service members receive the same level of care regardless of location.
  • 2018 Annual Report
    The NICoE's Annual Report for fiscal year 2018 highlights our continuous efforts to provide the highest standard of care for our patients and families impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI). These efforts led the organization to update its Strategic Plan for 2018-2020, to strengthen and codify the growing NICoE and Intrepid Spirit Centers Partnership Network. The updated NICoE Strategic Plan drives readiness efforts across the Network, supports efficiency in data-management, and contributes to the understanding of TBI care best practices, effective clinical treatments and continuity of care for service members and their beneficiaries across the Military Health System TBI Pathway of Care. The report includes feedback from our patients, stakeholders, and providers.
  • 2017 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2017 Annual Report, for the first time released as an infographic, highlights accomplishments during a year of continued change across the Military Health System. NICoE's ongoing collaborations with Intrepid Spirit Centers and other traumatic brain injury (TBI) healthcare organizations has expanded the knowledge and understanding across the national TBI pathway to provide high-quality care for our service members, their families, and other military health care beneficiaries.
  • 2016 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2016 Annual Report highlights accomplishments during a year of increased treatment offerings and an expansion of NICoE partnerships with the national network of Intrepid Spirit Centers and other Military Health System (MHS) organizations. These unified efforts and further opportunities for collaboration are impacting traumatic brain injury (TBI) care across the country and around the globe. The NICoE 2016 Annual Report won a prestigious 2016 Gold Vision Award from the League of American Communications Professionals (LACP). The international competition draws more than 1,000 applicants annually, and winning entries represent best-in-class public relations practices and communications capabilities
  • 2015 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2015 Annual Report highlights a very important and exciting year of change. The NICoE 2015 Annual Report won a prestigious 2015 Bronze Vision Award medal from the League of American Communications Professionals, whose international competition drew nearly 1,000 applicants. The 2015 report also placed Second in the 'Annual Report' category of the National Association of Government Communicators 2017 Blue Pencil & Gold Screen Award. The NICoE was one of five finalists in this category, with three of the other organizations receiving an Award of Excellence and one placing First.
  • 2014 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2014 Annual Report highights the many accomplishments achieved during the year, and the organization's ever-increasing ability to serve its complex patient population. This report includes successes and recognizes progress made by the dedicated staff. It demonstrates how the NICoE is caring for injured service members, conducting important research, educating care providers, and contributing to the larger TBI community and the MHS TBI Pathway of Care. The NICoE 2014 Annual Report received an Award of Excellence from Communications Concepts, Inc. in the APEX Awards for Publication Excellence.
  • 2013 Annual Report
    The NICoE 2013 Annual Report received the Platinum Award from LCAP for demonstrating exemplary communications capabilities. The report was selected as the top of the class in the category for Government-City/State/National classification, placing 54th of the top selected 100 worldwide submissions.
